Our Unwelcome (but beautiful) Visitor

After a nice errand-and-lunch trip, we were extremely surprised to come home to a very unexpected visitor.
Warning: The next few images, hidden behind the cut, may be graphic. Not like blood-and-guts graphic but perhaps slightly disturbing.

This, my friends, is the hawk that has been plaguing our chicks for over a year. Apparently he was making a meal out of one of our chickens.

Last year we found that we were missing about 10 chicks, and then one day we caught him in the act. This was him last year, scoping out our chicken coop.

We have no way of getting rid of him, since it's a felony to shoot/hunt him.

It was fascinating and infuriating at the same time.

I did notice why he didn't drag off the chicken, though. He couldn't seem to get his wings past the broken-down trellis thing. He'd grab the chicken and try to take off and get stuck.

I have to admit, he's a pretty thing though. When he noticed we were watching, he took off, hopping across the yard and watching us warily.

And then as soon as we hid behind the door again, he went back to his prize.

Sigh. And another chicken bites the dust. Or another hawk bites the chicken?
